Mac fn Key Opens Emoji Instead of Dictation? Fix the Conflict

Fix Mac fn or Globe key conflicts with emoji, Apple Dictation and WeChat input. Choose another trigger or free fn, then verify which app starts recording.

Rechecked October 23, 2026 against the public 0.3.8 source (build 45, released October 17) and Apple documentation. Ducduc is the new name; the public download still uses ListenIn. Later local builds are not the public release. Check the public release

Quick answer

If fn opens emoji or switches languages, check System Settings → Keyboard before changing the microphone. For Ducduc, the quickest route is choosing another Dictate key. To keep fn, set its macOS action to Do Nothing and move competing Dictation or input-method shortcuts. Test in Notes after each change.

If fn opens emoji, switches input sources or starts the wrong voice app, first check which app receives the key. A missing language model cannot explain an emoji panel appearing. For Ducduc, you can either choose a different trigger or free fn for dictation; you do not need to change your Mac’s input-switching habit to try the app.

The steps below were checked against Apple’s keyboard and Dictation documentation and the public build 45 source on October 23, 2026. They are a troubleshooting procedure, not a claim that every keyboard has been tested.

Quick route: choose another Ducduc trigger

  1. Open Ducduc Settings → Dictation → Dictate key.
  2. Choose an unused key such as Right ⌘ Command. Other presets include right Option, Control, Shift and F5; Custom shortcut → Record… accepts a key or combination.
  3. Click a normal text field in Notes. Use the chosen key to start, say a short phrase, then stop. Check the listening indicator and resulting text.
  4. If it works, keep that trigger. There is no additional dictation benefit to using fn specifically.

A new Ducduc installation checks macOS’s fn assignment. If macOS has already assigned it an action and you have not saved a trigger preference, Ducduc can start with Right Command. Read the key shown in the app instead of assuming the default is fn. A trigger you chose yourself takes precedence over that automatic fallback.

If the new key also fails everywhere, check Accessibility permission. If the indicator starts but no words appear, follow recognition-language troubleshooting. A key conflict and a transcription failure need different fixes.

Keep fn: change these settings in order

1. Check macOS’s action for fn or Globe

Go to System Settings → Keyboard → Press fn key to or Press 🌐 key to. Apple’s Keyboard settings guide lists input-source switching, Emoji & Symbols, Dictation and Do Nothing. Labels vary with the Mac and macOS version; use the version selector in Apple’s guide if needed.

Choose Do Nothing when you want Ducduc to use this key. That removes the system action; it does not disable shortcuts registered by another app.

Apple’s function-key guide covers Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys, which solves a different problem: what the numbered function keys do. It is not the fn/Globe action menu above.

2. Check Apple Dictation’s separate shortcut

In the same Keyboard page, open Dictation → Shortcut and move it away from fn if Ducduc will use fn. Apple’s Dictation guide explains custom shortcuts and warns that choosing one can automatically change the fn/Globe action. Recheck the action menu after changing the Dictation shortcut.

This is why “I already set fn to Do Nothing” can be true and the conflict can return later. Double-pressing fn is also a separate Dictation binding; do not assume that assigning a third-party app to a single press isolates it from the first press of a double press.

3. Check the app whose voice bar appears

If the visible bar belongs to WeChat Input or another input method, open that app’s settings, find its voice-input shortcut and move it to another key, or disable that particular shortcut. Read the app name on the bar: the WeChat app and WeChat Input are separate settings surfaces.

This guide makes no version-specific claim about WeChat Input’s shortcut menu. Use the settings in your installed app rather than a menu path from a different release.

Avoid splitting fn between one app’s tap gesture and another app’s hold gesture. Ducduc distinguishes a tap from a hold at about 0.22 seconds in the reviewed source. Two independent listeners can interpret the same press, and changing gesture timing is not a reliable way to separate them.

4. Re-select fn in Ducduc and test

Choose fn in Ducduc’s Dictate key setting. If macOS still owns it, Ducduc can show Free up the fn key… to open Keyboard settings. Return to Notes, dictate one short phrase and confirm that only the recorder you intended appears.

Identify the remaining symptom

What happens in a normal Notes fieldWhat it tells you to check
Emoji opens or input language changesmacOS fn/Globe action
Apple’s Dictation indicator appears after a double pressApple Dictation’s shortcut
A WeChat Input or other app’s voice bar appearsThat app’s voice shortcut
Ducduc’s indicator appears, then textThe trigger and this insertion path work; next check your actual target app
Nothing appears on fn, but Right Command worksfn’s assignment or the keyboard’s handling of fn
No trigger worksAccessibility, secure input and the installed app copy

When it works in Notes but fails in a terminal, continue with Secure Keyboard Entry troubleshooting. Changing the recognition language does not release a key blocked by secure input.

External keyboards need a separate check

An external keyboard’s fn can be a firmware layer key rather than the same event as Apple’s Globe key. For example, Keychron’s own programming guide describes fn as MO(1), a layer switch, for the keyboard configuration it shows. That example does not establish how every Keychron or third-party keyboard behaves.

Compare the built-in keyboard with the external one using the same app and shortcut. If Ducduc works on Right Command but cannot record the external fn in Custom shortcut, use an available key or consult that keyboard’s manual. Remapping or firmware changes are not necessary just to try dictation.

Ducduc also has a trigger-reachability warning when enough ordinary typing has been observed without the configured trigger. It is a useful clue, not proof of a broken keyboard. Its custom-shortcut recorder checks macOS-reserved keys and overlaps with Ducduc’s other modes; it cannot establish that every other installed app has left the key free.

If you are setting up the app for the first time, download Ducduc, keep the trigger shown during setup and test in Notes before adding a second voice tool. For a fuller migration, use the dictation-app switching checklist.
